About Lizelle

Lizelle Struwig, born 9 August 1995 in the Northern Freestate of South Africa, is a self-taught professional oil painter who loves spending her time behind the easel.

After getting introduced to oil paints in 11th grade, it became her preferred medium. Though she still sometimes practice pencil portraits (in graphite and colored pencil), she finds painting more rewarding.

Lizelle continued art as a hobby after school, taking in a few requests on the side, but the dream of being a full-time artist did not arise until late 2017. After discovering talented artist Brooke Cormier, her dream of becoming a professional artist was born. With passion starting to burn in her heart, Lizelle committed herself to pursuing a career in the art industry.

During the years 2015 -2021 Lizelle worked full-time managing a family coffee shop. She was left with limited time behind the easel, but that didn't stop her from following her dreams as a part-time artist. She continued to spend her weekends building her art career.

Lizelle stepped into the new year of 2022, starting her career as a full-time artist. She now continues to pursue her love for art daily in the beautiful Western Cape

About my art

I always had a great appreciation for art and creativity. As most children do, I started drawing as a kid. I wouldn’t say I drew more than the average child though. Creativity is a family gene, and the trait came with ease. In 2011 I took art as a school subject for my final years of high school. During these 3 years, I got basic introductions to mediums such as charcoal, watercolor, acrylics, soft pastels, sculpting, and oil paints. My true growth, however, did not start until I decided to pursue an art career.

Medium

After a brief introduction to a few different mediums, I immediately felt drawn to oils for various reasons. Compared to the other mediums, oil paints were so satisfying and relaxing to paint with.

I like the way oils feel when you drag them across a canvas and the fact that they dry slowly, leaving me to create realistic transitions by blending colors (one of my favorite techniques.)

Oils have a great variety of techniques (like glazing) to try and flexible ways to apply them because they dry so slowly. I also like the texture of a dried oil painting more than, for example, an acrylic painting, but I also strongly believe that every medium has something special. Apart from the reasons I fell in love with oils in the first place, I think I came to a point where it is now the medium I practiced and experimented with the most. It has now become the easiest to work with

Style

The two things that are usually prominent in my paintings are a soft blending technique and a very thin “smooth” layer of paint. This is connected to my perfectionistic personality trait and the lean towards a style of realism although I don’t specify in a hyper-realistic art style. I get this effect by blending the layers of paint with a dry soft “blending brush”. However, I am still in the process of discovering a style unique to myself. After years of experimenting and not having a signature art style, I can finally feel a transition happening. But I am not in a hurry, this is part of my journey, part of my growth.

Vision

I burn to create Godly breathed art that captures the soul, and touches the hearts of all people. People who are hurting, searching, or striving. Art that can be a light beacon of rest and motivation to keep going no matter where they are in life. I hope to offer educational teachings and inspire them to create art themselves in various forms, whether visual art, music, poetry, etc. I want to inspire people to take whatever talent/talents they have and use it to it's full capacity and glorifying God through that, because that alone is Gods purpose for our lives. I want to touch lives!

Inspiration

I find my deepest well of inspiration purely in life itself. I am overwhelmed by the beauty of creation.

A community of artists with their unique style and techniques are inspiration by itself but then there is the greatest Artist/Creator of all. Take nature, for instance, notice all the fascinating shapes, colors, and textures and how nothing is the same? But look again, look deeper and you'll find certain patterns, a signature of our creator. How amazing!

Inspiration is everywhere, from the lyrics of your favorite song to the blossoms every spring. My artistic influence comes from many directions, nature, human life, the universe, conversation, poetry, etc. - I am also deeply influenced by emotion, in other words, the whole of creation, because all of that combined is one enchanting piece of art.
